Objective Explanation

Today I had one of those moments that makes me glad to be in the classroom. We have been working on explaining methods in Maths, and I asked a child to explain to the rest of the class how to work out the difference between two numbers using a hundred square.

They gave a great explanation and I reiterated it, saying “Yes, you just count down the number of jumps…”

At that point the child interrupted me politely but confidently to say “No, Mr. Quinlan don’t say count down- people will think you mean down the rows [in tens] – say ‘count back’.”.

I don’t think I need to reiterate that point.
