I have to be honest and say that Ian has used the images with a group of low confidence writers in our school and their feedback was incredibly positive. They loved the fact that the images were non linear and so 5 children could come up with five different sequences and therefore stories.
The music element is important as it helps the children to think about their writing in a different way.
A great resource and something which should be made into an APP
Hi, thanks for taking the time. I think you’re both right, the pedagogy is their to be used in schools but that’s what I’ll do. The app is now going to be commercial – targeted at parents – If schools want to use it for L.A etc. They can, any user can upload to the multi-media blog! Share, learn, refine, collaborate.
I would actually look at it both ways. It could be funded by schools and access given to pupils at home.
In our case we would put something like this on our pupil symbaloo page with a password handed out in school.
Put bluntly I would also look to see if you can ensure that there is peer support and development and then schools could justify buying it using Pupil Premium.
I agree with Pete though it would be a very popular home app – comic strip version of storybird?
Looks a great idea especially for persuading boys into writing. In year 5 some boys who are reluctant readers are able to fall in love with reading again thanks to comics and graphic novels. The ability to add their own music on top would be another string to your bow with this idea because other apps I use also having music make the children return again and again.
Ian, this can go beyond children- Im sure this is your passion’s focus though! I’d use it in my University MBA classes to challenge participants to build case study narratives. Narrative- being a key leadership skill. Ill be back in with you guys tomorrow so let’s talk then. Keep the flow. Un abrazo, Ed
Hi
Looks like a great idea.
I think children should be taught to think about graphic novels and story telling. Like the addition of music to create a more multi-modal text. For reluctant writers this would be a great resource. Different graphic set for boys and girls would be great.
BUT does it have to be an App? A site that was web based and HTML 5 compatible would work on all devices and so you wouldn’t restrict audience. Not every school has iPads or tablets but all will have an ICT suite and/or laptops.
Oliver is a Lecturer in Education at Plymouth University. Mixing previous experience of music production and IT support with influences from Early Years education, he previously taught in a primary school developing practice around independent learning and new technologies.

Great insight Ed, that hadn’t really crossed my mind. Great to know the possibilities, they seem to be endless.
Will be great to keep the dialogue going!
Kind regards,
Ian
