Night Zookeeper inspires children to create and write for a real audience and help each other to develop their ideas.

Starting with the Day Zookeeper children develop their non-fiction writing, supported by factual content to learn the rules of writing. Access to the Day Zookeeper is offered to schools for free, and supports teachers to develop English objectives from the National Curriculum. But when night falls, the rules can be broken…

For a subscripton fee, children can access the Night Zookeeper, where their creativity is sparked by a rich story of the escapades of the animals in the zoo during the night. Children design and draw their own animals and share these creations online. Parents can easily get involved and share in the experience.

They then develop a story around these animals, with support from story structures, and the ability to invite other children to help them write.

The stories and animal artwork which inspired them can be shared with other children, who can give recognition points to the ideas they enjoy. Parents can share their children’s work through social networks and email for family and friends to appreciate, giving children a real audience and a reason to write.

Night Zookeeper is all about supporting the basics of learning, by starting with the concept that inspiring children to create for a real audience with meaningful feedback helps their skills as writers and artists to grow.

We are still developing these ideas.. please leave a comment to let us know your thoughts on this product.

  1. Hi all,

My first thought is that in some way I’m getting the message that non-fiction writing is valued less than fiction writing. I’m purely saying this because the fiction writing part charges a fee. Saying that, I understand the need to offer something for free to entice people to subscribe! Can people get a taste of what the Night Zookeeper offers?

Is there a drawing app within The Night Zookeeper or do children create elsewhere and upload?

Can teachers share stories and artwork be shared outside of The Night Zookeeper network too? On class blogs for instance. Would it be schools paying the fee or parents? I’m a bit unclear on that but may have missed something earlier, apologies of so! Who moderates?

There is something magical about adventures of animals in a zoo at night and over all I like the idea of creating creatures to inspire creative writing.

  2. So u got the fremium thing going….. This is mobile, it’s opportunistic and about keeping kids occupied, Base it on audio, kids get enou writing its playing with ideas that’s valuable…..audioboo type stories, using something like podium……I would impulse buy the night zoo on my phone and help the @ethinking jar make up his stories, post his pictures using a free app already existing that exports pics to my photo gallery..

Call me I’ll explain more….but don’t give nick gibb my email ok?

  3. Or….. Sell 3 year deal to schools for £300 sell to 200 schools year 1 300 year 2 etc

    60,000 yr 1
    90,000 yr 2
    120,000 yr 3
    120,000 yr4 plus 60,000 resubscription

Add to that the app for parents to buy –

Look at mr thornes model on iTunes – films free on his website

  4. Loving all the ideas and good comments coming along. The progress of the project within this #swel weekend has been great.

If you could provide the school subscription option in such a way that the site could be linked from their learning platform/website/blog and work done in the nightzookeeper could be saved back onto their learning platform/blog then that would be useful.

Or on the other side I think the scope is there to have schools using it and not “selling” it to parents but the kids would be going on and getting creative and would maybe be the ones asking parents to pay for them to sign up as a private account which would give the parents and children more ownership re: how they want to create and share although may be a harder model in terms of getting a regular income stream.
