Number fans

It’s been a hard week, but something happened today that made me smile.

I was using number fans with my class, giving them a two digit number and they had to make the number that would make it up to 100. I thought I would throw in something to confuse, and gave 67 as number fans only have one of each digit, making 33 impossible to show.

I expected confusion, hopefully children calling out “You can’t do that!”, and when questioned explaining why. I wanted to cause some friction.

What I got was the whole class, without any fuss, pairing up and holding two fans side by side to make 33.

I’ve got a lot of respect for children who think like that.
